GI Tags for Meghalaya Ryndia Silk
What Happened
The Geographical Indications Registry granted GI tags to Meghalaya's Ryndia silk and Khasi handloom products. Ryndia, also known as Eri silk, is a traditional 'Ahimsa' or peace silk produced by weavers from the Khasi, Bhoi, and Jaintia communities without killing the silkworms.
Why It Matters
This recognition protects indigenous traditional knowledge and provides global legal protection to Meghalaya's ethical silk production, boosting the local handloom economy.
