General Tax Slabs: BEFORE, India had a four-tier structure of 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. NOW, this is replaced by a simplified two-tier structure of 5% and 18% for most goods and services.

Luxury and Demerit Goods: BEFORE, these items were taxed at the peak rate of 28% plus a compensation cess. NOW, a consolidated 40% slab has been introduced specifically for select luxury and demerit goods.

Essential Goods Exemption: BEFORE, some essential food items and specific drugs had varying tax rates or conditional exemptions. NOW, 33 life-saving drugs and items like UHT milk and paneer are completely exempted from GST, effective September 22, 2025.
