Patharkatti Stone Art Granted GI Tag
What Happened
The 300-year-old Patharkatti stone craft from Gaya, Bihar, received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in January 2025. This black granite sculpting tradition traces its roots to Rajasthani artisans brought by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar to build the Vishnupad Temple.
Why It Matters
The GI tag preserves a unique heritage link between Rajasthan and Bihar while providing legal protection and global market recognition for traditional Indian stone craftsmanship.
