FCI Foodgrain Stocks Exceed Buffer Norms Significantly
What Happened
As of October 2025, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) reported foodgrain stocks of 676.43 lakh tons, more than double the mandatory buffer norm of 307.7 lakh tons. To address the massive surplus, particularly in rice, the government has introduced new bulk tender mechanisms to offload stocks outside the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS).
Why It Matters
Excessive stocks increase carrying costs and storage wastage, forcing the government to find aggressive disposal routes to manage fiscal burden and prevent market price distortions.
