MoSPI Launches First National Household Income Survey
What Happened
On February 1, 2026, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) launched the National Household Income Survey (NHIS). This nationwide initiative marks India's first systematic effort to directly collect income data from households. Guided by a Technical Expert Group, the survey aims to generate reliable income estimates, map regional wealth disparities, and evaluate the impact of technology on wages.
Why It Matters
It fills a historic statistical gap by directly measuring household income, enabling policymakers to better assess economic inequality, track regional disparities, and design highly targeted welfare interventions.
