[Gross State Domestic Product]

The Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) is a key economic concept and measure that represents the total monetary value of all finished goods and services produced within the geographical boundaries of a State or Union Territory during a financial year, without duplication. It is the state-level counterpart of the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and serves as the most important indicator for measuring a State's economic growth and development.

The calculation of GSDP is overseen by the National Statistical Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), which issues guidelines to ensure uniform definitions and methodologies consistent with national accounts. The actual estimates are prepared by the Directorates of Economics and Statistics (DES) in each State/UT, using state-specific data. The GSDP is primarily calculated using the Production Approach, which sums the Gross Value Added (GVA) across all economic sectors within the state. It is measured at current prices (Nominal GSDP) and at constant prices (Real GSDP) to eliminate the effect of price inflation and reflect the real growth of the economy.

GSDP is intrinsically connected to the national accounts system, including the calculation of Net State Domestic Product (NSDP), which is GSDP minus the Consumption of Fixed Capital. It is a crucial factor in India's fiscal federalism, as it helps compare development levels across states, guides policy planning, and forms the basis for the Finance Commission's criteria for fiscal transfers.

The methodology for GSDP estimation is periodically updated; for instance, the base year for national accounts was revised from 2004-05 to 2011-12 in January 2015. More recently, the NSO is preparing to roll out a new series with a base year of 2022-23, which aims to strengthen GSDP estimation by moving toward greater direct estimation, reducing reliance on fixed ratios, and improving the use of state-level data.
