[Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation]

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is an executive ministry of the Government of India, functioning as the nodal institution for the country's statistical system and for monitoring central government schemes. MoSPI was created as an independent ministry on October 15, 1999, by merging the erstwhile Department of Statistics and the Department of Programme Implementation to centralize statistical coordination and programme oversight.

The Ministry operates through two main wings: the Statistics Wing and the Programme Implementation Wing. The Statistics Wing, now primarily housed under the National Statistical Office (NSO), is responsible for compiling key economic indicators like the National Accounts Statistics (including GDP) and the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), and for conducting large-scale sample surveys such as the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS). The Programme Implementation Wing monitors the execution of central sector infrastructure projects costing ₹150 crore and above, and oversees schemes like the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) and the Twenty Point Programme.

A significant recent change occurred in May 2019 (order dated May 23, 2019), when the NSO was formally created by merging the Central Statistics Office (CSO) and the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) to streamline the official statistics system. MoSPI is also connected to the National Statistical Commission (NSC), an autonomous body formed on July 12, 2006, which oversees statistical matters. Furthermore, the Ministry is currently undertaking a major reform to update the base year for key macroeconomic indicators: GDP and IIP are being updated to 2022-23 (from 2011-12), and the Consumer Price Index (CPI) is being updated to 2024 (from 2012). The Ministry has also reduced the time lag for releasing annual survey reports from nearly eight months to about three months through digital transformation.
