ACITI

The ACITI is a trilateral Technology and Innovation Partnership (or Australia-Canada-India Trilateral Initiative) that functions as a strategic framework, not an act or institution. It was officially announced on November 22, 2025, on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, following a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The partnership was created to strengthen strategic and economic ties, address global supply chain vulnerabilities, and build secure, democratic alternatives in critical and emerging technologies.

The mechanism of ACITI is based on leveraging the complementary strengths of the three nations. It focuses on three core pillars: green technology (including clean energy and net-zero strategies), artificial intelligence (AI deployment and safety), and diversifying critical supply chains. India contributes its massive digital market and scale, Australia provides advanced clean-tech and a resource base, and Canada offers high-end expertise in AI and advanced technology. The initiative aims to secure the supply of critical minerals like Lithium and Rare Earth Elements, which are essential for Electric Vehicles and Semiconductor production. Officials from the three countries were scheduled to meet in the first quarter of 2026 to advance the initiative, and the text of a trilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was finalized by March 2026, indicating a progression from a concept to a formalized framework.

ACITI connects to broader geopolitical and economic concepts such as Friend-shoring and complements other international frameworks like the Minerals Security Partnership (MSP) and the Quad. It builds on existing bilateral agreements, such as the India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA). The partnership is a strategic move to ensure reliable access to critical resources and technologies, positioning the three democracies as a counterbalance to tech ecosystems dominated by authoritarian states.
