C-DOT

The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) is an autonomous institution and India's premier telecommunications technology Research and Development (R&D) centre. It was established on 24 August 1984 by the Government of India under the Ministry of Communications. The institution was founded to solve the problem of India's underdeveloped telecom infrastructure, which was heavily dependent on imported equipment, by promoting technological self-reliance. Its primary goal was to develop cost-effective, scalable, and robust telecom systems suitable for India's diverse geography, especially for the vast rural population.

C-DOT operates as an autonomous R&D centre under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications. Its mechanism involves designing and developing indigenous, secure, and state-of-the-art systems to achieve technological sovereignty. Its early success was the development of the Rural Automatic Exchange (RAX) and Small Rural Automatic Exchange (SRAX) systems, which revolutionized rural telephony in the late 1980s. Today, C-DOT works on advanced areas like Optical, Switching, Wireless, Security, Network Management, and futuristic technologies such as 5G, M2M/IOT, and AI. It supports the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and national programs like Digital India and BharatNet.

While its core mission of indigenization remains, C-DOT has evolved from a hardware development centre to a full-fledged R&D institution. A recent change includes its current work on implementing the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) for the National Disaster Management Authority to disseminate early warnings. It is connected to the broader regulatory framework, including the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
