DRDO

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is a premier research and development institution under the Department of Defence Research and Development, Ministry of Defence, Government of India. It is charged with the military's research and development, with the mission to achieve self-reliance in critical defence technologies and systems.

The DRDO was established on January 1, 1958, by merging the Technical Development Establishment (TDEs) of the Indian Army, the Directorate of Technical Development & Production (DTDP), and the Defence Science Organisation (DSO). This consolidation was intended to create an indigenous military R&D base to equip the Indian Armed Forces with state-of-the-art weapon systems and equipment. The organisation's motto is "Balasya Mulam Vigyanam," meaning "Strength's Origin is in Science".

The DRDO operates through a network of over 50 laboratories across India, engaging in multi-disciplinary research in fields like aeronautics, armaments, electronics, missiles, and naval systems. Its mechanism involves designing, developing, and leading the production of weapon systems, such as the Agni and Prithvi missile series, the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft, and the Akash air defence system. A separate Department of Defence Research and Development was formed in 1980 to administer the DRDO.

The organisation is closely connected to the three defence services (Army, Navy, and Air Force) and the broader Indian defence industry. A significant recent change, announced in the Budget 2022, was opening up 25% of the defence R&D budget for industry, startups, and academia to foster private sector participation and innovation. Furthermore, a comprehensive restructuring, based on the recommendations of the Prof. K. VijayRaghavan committee, is underway with a deadline of January 1, 2026, to transform the DRDO into a leaner and more agile institution. This reform includes a proposal to separate the post of Secretary (R&D) from the DRDO Chairman to improve accountability.
