GS Paper 1

The General Studies Paper I is a core component of the UPSC Civil Services (Main) Examination, a subjective paper titled "Indian Heritage and Culture, History, and Geography of the World and Society". It is a 250-mark paper, one of the seven papers whose scores contribute to a candidate's final rank. The current structure of the General Studies papers was introduced as part of the significant reforms to the Civil Services Examination pattern, with the detailed syllabus being in effect since around 2013. Its purpose is to evaluate a candidate's comprehensive understanding of India's past, society, and the global world, which is considered essential for effective civil services.

The paper is a 3-hour descriptive test, typically comprising 20 compulsory questions. The questions are divided into 10-mark questions requiring a 150-word answer and 15-mark questions requiring a 250-word answer. The syllabus is broadly divided into three pillars: History (including Art Forms, Literature, Architecture, Modern Indian History from the mid-eighteenth century, the Freedom Struggle, and Post-independence Consolidation), Indian Society (covering issues like Globalization, Social Empowerment, and Diversity of India), and Geography (Physical and Human Geography of the World and India). It connects directly to the other three General Studies papers (GS-II, GS-III, and GS-IV) which cover Polity, Economy, and Ethics, respectively, forming a holistic assessment of a candidate's knowledge. While the core subjects remain static, the paper has gradually evolved, with a noticeable trend from 2021 to 2025 to increasingly link conceptual knowledge with current affairs and focus more on questions related to Indian Society.
