IT Hardware

IT Hardware is a fundamental concept in Information Technology, referring to the physical, tangible components of a computer system that you can see and touch. It is the collection of devices that store, process, transmit, or display data, acting as the physical counterpart to Software, which provides the instructions. The history of hardware stretches back to early mechanical calculating devices, with the modern concept of Information Technology first appearing in the 1958 Harvard Business Review. The hardware solved the problem of performing complex calculations and managing data flow, evolving from early electronic devices like the ENIAC.

The mechanism of IT hardware involves three essential components working in concert: the Central Processing Unit (CPU), often called the "brain," which executes instructions; Random Access Memory (RAM), which provides temporary, high-speed storage for data currently in use; and persistent storage, such as SSDs or HDDs, which maintains data even when the power is off.

In the Indian context, IT Hardware connects directly to the government's push for self-reliance and domestic manufacturing. Key related concepts include the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme-2 for IT Hardware, launched in August 2023, which incentivizes local production of items like laptops, tablets, and servers. The sector has seen significant recent policy changes concerning imports of products classified under HSN 8471. The government initially announced restrictions in August 2023, but this was replaced by the Import Management System (IMS), effective from November 1, 2023. Under the IMS, companies must register the quantity and value of imports for monitoring purposes, a pragmatic shift from the initial strict licensing requirement, with the system recently extended until December 31, 2026. The core goal of promoting domestic manufacturing remains the same.
