The India-US Bilateral Relations is a dynamic, evolving Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership that defines the diplomatic, economic, and security ties between the two nations. The relationship was formally established in 1947 following India's independence, but it was characterized by Cold War-era divergence, with the US aligning with Pakistan and India tilting toward the USSR after the 1971 Indo-Soviet Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Cooperation. The partnership began to transform significantly after India's economic liberalization in 1991 and the end of the Cold War, moving past estrangement caused by US sanctions following India's nuclear tests in 1974 and 1998.
The partnership works through numerous high-level dialogues, most notably the 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue between the foreign and defense ministers/secretaries of both countries. A key mechanism is the signing of four foundational military agreements: the General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA) in 2002, the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement (LEMOA) in 2016, the Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement (COMCASA) in 2018, and the Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement (BECA) in 2020. These agreements enable logistics sharing, secure communications, and geospatial intelligence exchange. The relationship connects to the broader Indo-Pacific strategy, where both nations share an interest in promoting security and stability, and is closely linked to the Quad (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue) with Japan and Australia.
The relationship has recently changed with the elevation to a Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and the signing of the final foundational defense pact, BECA, in 2020. While defense and strategic cooperation has strengthened, trade relations have seen fluctuations, such as the US terminating India's preferential trade status in 2019. However, a framework for an Interim Agreement on reciprocal trade was announced in February 2026, aiming to reduce tariffs and address non-tariff barriers. The core of the partnership, founded on shared democratic values and a strong 5.2 million-strong Indian-American diaspora, has remained a constant source of strength.
