India-US interim trade agreement

The India-US Interim Trade Agreement (ITA) is a temporary, outcome-oriented trade pact, or "early harvest" deal, designed to deliver immediate commercial gains and serve as a framework for a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). The framework was announced on February 3, 2026, following a call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Its creation was a strategic de-escalation of trade tensions that had intensified in August 2025 when the U.S. imposed a 25% tariff on Indian imports, plus an additional 25% penalty linked to India's import of Russian crude oil, resulting in effective tariffs of up to 50%.

The mechanism of the ITA involves reciprocal concessions to stabilize the trade relationship. The U.S. agreed to remove the additional 25% tariff, contingent on India's commitment to halt Russian oil purchases. Furthermore, the U.S. agreed to lower its base Reciprocal Tariff on Indian goods from 25% to 18%, bringing the effective tariff down to 18%. In return, India committed to eliminating or reducing tariffs on all U.S. industrial goods and a wide range of American food and agricultural products, including dried distillers' grains, red sorghum, and wine and spirits. India also intends to purchase over $500 billion worth of U.S. energy, information and communication technology, and coal over five years.

The ITA is directly connected to the anticipated comprehensive U.S.-India Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) and the U.S. "Reciprocal Tariff" policy (Executive Order 14257). While the framework was announced in February 2026, recent adjustments to U.S. tariff policy, including an extra 10% tariff on several countries including India starting July 24, have necessitated further discussions. India's Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has stated that the final details of the BTA will be announced once the U.S. offers a preferential rate compared to India's competitors.
