The Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) is an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India, with its headquarters in Dehradun. It is registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. The Council was formed as an umbrella organisation in 1986 to direct and manage research and education in the forestry sector, and was declared autonomous on June 1, 1991. Its historical roots trace back to the establishment of the Forest School in Dehradun in 1878 and the subsequent Imperial Forest Research Institute in 1906.
ICFRE works to conduct forestry research, transfer developed technologies to state governments and user agencies, and impart forestry education. Its mechanism involves coordinating research programs and aligning them with national priorities, including the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals and combating climate change. The Council has a pan-India presence through 9 Regional Research Institutes and 4 advanced centres. ICFRE is the administrator and implementor of India's Green Credits Program. Recently, the Council's Director General, Kanchan Devi, was appointed to head a high-powered expert panel by the Supreme Court in June 2026 to re-examine the definition and delineation of the Aravalli hill range, demonstrating its role in providing scientific advice for policy and judicial matters.
