Industrial Corridors

Industrial Corridors are a strategic concept and a central development strategy in India, defined as linear development zones that connect major economic centers through an integrated network of roads, railways, ports, and airports. The concept's modern implementation in India began with the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC), for which the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (DMICDC) was incorporated in January 2008. The initiative was created to solve the problem of high logistics costs and to strengthen India's industrial ecosystem by enabling wider market access and stronger integration with global production networks.

The mechanism works through the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme (NICDP), which is guided by the PM GatiShakti framework. The NICDP is currently developing projects across 11 Industrial Corridors. The core provision is a partnership approach where the Government of India provides funds as equity/debt for trunk infrastructure, and the respective State Governments provide the land. The goal is to develop Greenfield Industrial Smart Cities and provide "plug-and-play" infrastructure at the plot level.

The key institution is the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation Limited (NICDC), which was previously known as the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation Limited (DMICDC). The NICDP is envisaged on the backbone of major transportation corridors like the Eastern & Western Dedicated Freight Corridors. Recently, the Union Budget 2026-27 announced the development of an integrated East Coast Industrial Corridor. Furthermore, NITI Aayog is currently undertaking a review of the institutional and implementation framework to identify bottlenecks and recommend reforms to accelerate project delivery.
