The JANANI Portal is a service-oriented digital platform launched by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, to strengthen maternal and child healthcare services. The acronym JANANI stands for Journey of Antenatal, Natal and Neonatal Integrated Care. It was created to solve the problem of fragmented health records and ensure seamless tracking of services across the entire continuum of care for women during their reproductive age. The platform was launched in 2026 and serves as an upgraded version of the existing Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) portal.
The mechanism of the portal involves creating a longitudinal health record for beneficiaries, capturing key service delivery events from antenatal care through family planning. A key provision is the introduction of QR-enabled digital Mother and Child Health (MCH) Cards, which ensure portability and easy access to health records across healthcare facilities. The system works by providing automated alerts for high-risk pregnancies, generating due-lists for timely follow-ups by health workers, and offering real-time dashboards for supervisory review. Beneficiaries can register using unique identifiers like ABHA, Aadhaar (via OTP and biometrics), or mobile numbers, which enables a pan-India search functionality to ensure continuity of care for migratory populations and prevent duplication of records. The JANANI Portal connects to other national digital health platforms, such as U-WIN (for immunization) and POSHAN (for nutrition), facilitating seamless data exchange and improved coordination across sectors. The platform replaced the older RCH portal, retaining the core function of tracking maternal and child health indicators while adding advanced digital features like interoperability and self-registration.
