The Cropping Pattern is a dynamic agricultural concept that defines the proportion of land area under various crops at a given time, representing the yearly sequence and spatial arrangement of crops on a piece of land. Its origin is ancient, with evidence of rice cultivation dating back to the Harappan period, where it was driven by subsistence needs and a deep ecological understanding that favoured practices like crop rotation and mixed cropping to manage risk and maintain soil fertility.
The mechanism is structured around India's three main cropping seasons: Kharif (June-July to September-October), which coincides with the Southwest Monsoon for crops like rice and cotton; Rabi (October-December to April-June), the winter season for crops such as wheat and mustard; and the short Zaid season (March-July) for vegetables. The pattern is influenced by physical factors like climate and soil, and political factors, notably the Minimum Support Price (MSP) system, which has historically incentivized the rice-wheat monoculture in states like Punjab and Haryana.
This concept connects to the broader Cropping System, which includes management techniques like intercropping, and to the measure of Cropping Intensity, which has increased from 111% in 1950-51 to 155.9% in 2022-23. Recently, the pattern has undergone a structural shift since 1980-81, with a decline in the share of foodgrains from over 80% at Independence to 63.81% in 2020-21. This change is characterized by crop diversification towards high-value crops like horticulture and oilseeds, with the area under oilseeds expanding from 12.14% in 1980-81 to 14.35% in 2023-24, driven by changing consumption patterns and government initiatives like the National Mission on Oilseeds and Oil Palm. However, the dominance of the water-intensive rice-wheat cycle in the North, sustained by MSP, remains a persistent feature.
