The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is a ministry of the Government of India responsible for formulating and implementing policies related to electronics, information technology, and the promotion of the country's digital economy. Its origins trace back to the Department of Electronics established in 1970. It was formally created as a full-fledged ministry on July 19, 2016, by bifurcating it from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to focus exclusively on digital technologies. MeitY administers the Information Technology Act, 2000, and its core mechanism involves policy formulation for the IT industry, promoting electronics manufacturing, and ensuring cybersecurity. It spearheads the Digital India program, which aims to transform India into a digitally empowered society, and oversees institutions like the National Informatics Centre and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In). A significant recent change is the notification of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Amendment Rules, 2026, which came into force on February 20, 2026. These amendments strengthen the due diligence obligations of intermediaries under the IT Act, 2000, and specifically regulate synthetically generated information (SGI), such as deepfakes, by mandating visible labeling and embedded metadata for public-facing content. This regulatory focus on emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence is also seen in its oversight of the IndiaAI Mission.
