The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is an executive ministry of the Government of India, serving as the nodal agency for the planned development of the country's statistical system and the coordination of statistical activities. It was established as an independent Ministry on October 15, 1999, through the merger of the Department of Statistics and the Department of Programme Implementation, consolidating the functions of data generation and project monitoring.
MoSPI operates through two main wings: the Statistics Wing, known as the National Statistical Office (NSO), and the Programme Implementation (PI) Wing. The NSO is responsible for compiling the National Accounts (including estimates of GDP), conducting large-scale sample surveys (like the National Sample Survey (NSS) activities), and releasing key economic indicators such as the Consumer Price Indices (CPI) and the Index of Industrial Production (IIP). The PI Wing monitors the implementation of the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) and tracks Central Sector Projects costing ₹150 crores and above.
MoSPI connects to the National Statistical Commission (NSC), which was created on July 12, 2006, to evolve policies and standards in statistical matters. It also administratively controls the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), an Institution of National Importance under the Indian Statistical Institute Act, 1959.
Recently, MoSPI has undertaken significant reforms, including a major base year revision for key indices. The new series of CPI with base year 2024 was released on February 12, 2026, incorporating Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) for data collection. Furthermore, the new series of GDP with base year 2022-23 is scheduled for release on February 27, 2026, and the new IIP with base year 2022-23 is set for release on May 28, 2026.
