NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), incorporated as a Public company on April 3, 2020. It serves as the international arm of NPCI, which was established under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007, as an initiative of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Indian Banks' Association (IBA). NIPL was created to export NPCI's indigenously developed offerings and technological acumen to foreign markets. The core problem it solves is extending the success of India's digital payment infrastructure globally, particularly by internationalizing the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and the RuPay card scheme. The mechanism involves deploying NPCI's real-time payment systems outside India through collaborations with foreign central banks and financial institutions. For instance, NIPL has established the UPI-PayNow linkage with the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) to facilitate real-time cross-border fund transfers. A recent development is the expansion of this linkage, which added 13 more banks and went live on July 17, 2025, to simplify remittances between India and Singapore. Furthermore, NIPL successfully integrated UPI with the Maldives' Instant Payment System 'Favara' on July 31, 2026, enabling individuals to make real-time person-to-person (P2P) transfers to UPI-enabled bank accounts in India.
