National Informatics Centre

The National Informatics Centre (NIC) is a premier Indian government department and institution operating under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). It functions as the technology partner of the Government of India, providing infrastructure, IT consultancy, and services. The NIC was established in 1976 with the objective of introducing Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) into government functioning to enhance administrative efficiency and service delivery, marking India's early attempts at computerization in governance.

The core mechanism of the NIC is its nationwide ICT network, NICNET, which provides institutional linkages to all Central Ministries/Departments, 36 State Governments/Union Territories, and approximately 708 District Administrations. Through this network, the NIC acts as a "prime builder" of e-Government applications, developing and implementing IT systems for the delivery of citizen-centric services. Key infrastructure includes four national data centers and the government's cloud platform, MeghRaj.

The NIC is a key implementing arm for national e-governance programmes and the Digital India initiative. A related institution is the National Informatics Centre Services Inc. (NICSI), established in 1995 as a Section 8 company to procure and provide IT solutions for e-governance projects. In terms of recent change, the government issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) in 2022 for a consultant to undertake a comprehensive organizational restructuring and revamp of the NIC to address gaps in workforce and skillset and keep pace with evolving digital technologies. However, its core mandate of providing technology-driven solutions to the government remains unchanged.
