The National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) is a key operational institution of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), headquartered in Hyderabad, Telangana. It is an institution with the core mandate of acquiring, processing, and disseminating remote sensing data from satellites and aerial platforms for national development and geospatial applications. The NRSC originated as the National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA), established on September 2, 1974, as a registered society under the Department of Science and Technology (DST). Its creation addressed the need for specialized infrastructure to utilize remote sensing for resource management and national development, building on the foundational work of the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR).
The NRSC's mechanism involves operating ground stations, such as the one at Shadnagar near Hyderabad, to receive data from Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) satellites and international missions. It generates value-added geospatial products, provides aerial remote sensing services, and disseminates data to users. A critical function is providing real-time disaster management support, such as generating flood inundation maps using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data from satellites like RISAT-1A. The NRSC connects directly to its parent organization, ISRO, and the Department of Space (DOS). It also operates the online geoportal Bhoonidhi for archiving satellite data and the Bhuvan services for geospatial applications. A significant change occurred in 2008, when the autonomous NRSA was restructured and integrated as a full-fledged centre of ISRO, and renamed the NRSC, to enhance its role in the national space program. The core function of satellite data management and application development has remained constant.
