Piyush Goyal is a prominent Indian politician and a Cabinet Minister in the Government of India, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He is a member of the 18th Lok Sabha, having been elected from the Mumbai North constituency in 2024, after serving as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha for 14 years.
Goyal's political career spans over 35 years, during which he also served as the BJP's national treasurer. He was elevated to a Cabinet Minister position on September 3, 2017. Before entering politics, he was an investment banker and an all-India second-rank holder Chartered Accountant and Law graduate from Mumbai University.
He currently serves as the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, a portfolio he has held since 2019. In this role, he has overseen the implementation of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Schemes to boost the 'Make in India' initiative and directed the use of the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) for systematizing e-commerce. His tenure saw India's exports reach a record high of approximately $776 billion in 2022-23.
Goyal has held multiple key portfolios, including Minister of Textiles and Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. As Minister of Consumer Affairs, he led the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY), the world's largest food security program. Earlier, as Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power, Coal, and New & Renewable Energy (2014–2017), he oversaw the fast-track electrification of nearly 18,000 villages and the launch of the world's largest LED bulb distribution program, UJALA. He was also the Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha from July 2021 to June 2024. For his contributions to energy policy, he was awarded the Carnot Prize in 2018.
