SCTIMST

The acronym SCTIMST stands for the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, an Institution of National Importance located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. It is an autonomous statutory body under the administrative control of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.

The institute's origin dates back to 1973, when the Royal Family of Travancore gifted a building to the Government of Kerala, and the Sree Chitra Tirunal Medical Center was inaugurated in 1976. The core problem it was created to solve was the need to amalgamate medical sciences and technology within a single institutional framework, with a mandate for research and development in biomedical technology and advanced medical specialties. This concept was deemed sufficiently important for the Government of India to declare it an Institute of National Importance by an Act of Parliament in 1980 (Act 52 of 1980), giving it the status of a University.

SCTIMST works through three distinct wings: the Hospital Wing, which serves as a tertiary referral center for cardiovascular and neurological diseases; the Biomedical Technology Wing, which focuses on developing and commercializing medical devices and implants; and the Achutha Menon Centre for Health Science Studies (AMCHSS), which is a center of excellence for public health research and training. The Biomedical Technology Wing has been instrumental in establishing a medical device industry base in India by successfully developing and commercializing technologies like the indigenous blood bag and artificial heart valve. The institute is connected to the Department of Science and Technology (DST), which provides administrative control.

A recent development includes the institute's decision to furnish information under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005, regarding the minutes of its governing body and institute body meetings, following a directive from the Central Information Commission (CIC) in 2025. This change promotes greater transparency and accountability in the institute's functioning.
