Sriharikota

The term Sriharikota refers to a spindle-shaped barrier island in the Tirupati district of Andhra Pradesh, which is the location of India's primary spaceport, the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR. It is a geographical feature that houses a critical scientific institution.

The island was chosen in 1969 by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to serve as the country's main satellite launching station. The problem it solved was providing an ideal, safe, and geographically advantageous location for rocket launches. The site became operational on October 9, 1971, with the launch of the 'Rohini-125' sounding rocket. The selection was based on several factors: its proximity to the equator provides an extra centripetal force from the Earth's rotation, which conserves fuel for eastward launches; its location on the east coast allows rockets to fly over the Bay of Bengal, ensuring that debris from any launch failure falls safely into the sea, away from populated areas; and its large, uninhabited area of about 145 km² provides a necessary safety zone.

The SDSC SHAR mechanism involves providing the complete launch base infrastructure, including facilities for solid propellant processing, static testing of solid motors, launch vehicle integration, and launch operations. It currently has three operational launch pads used for launching sounding rockets, polar satellites, and geosynchronous satellites. The center is operated by ISRO, which uses multi-stage rockets like the PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) and GSLV (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle) to launch missions such as Chandrayaan and the Mars Orbiter Mission.

The institution has undergone a significant name change: the original Sriharikota Range (SHAR) was renamed Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR on September 5, 2002, in memory of former ISRO Chairman Satish Dhawan. While the name changed, the core function as India's primary orbital launch site remained the same. Recently, the center has expanded, with the inauguration of the first private launchpad and mission control centre in India, named ALP-01 (Dhanush), by AgniKul Cosmos on November 28, 2022.
