The Mission Sudarshan Chakra is a major Indian defense initiative and scheme to develop an advanced, multi-layered, and AI-enabled national security architecture. It is sometimes referred to as the Sudarshan Kavach in the context of a cohesive "kavach" (shield) for the nation. The mission was formally announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15, 2025, during his Independence Day address, with a target completion year of 2035. The initiative was conceived to solve the problem of complex, massed, and mixed aerial threats, drawing lessons from the successful Operation Sindoor in May 2025.
The mechanism of this system works by creating an "impregnable shield" and a "decisive sword". It is a networked architecture that fuses the cyber, cognitive, and aerospace domains into a unified strategy. Key provisions include integrating the existing Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS), which uses a network of radars and sensors developed by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). The system aims to use cutting-edge technologies like AI-Powered Systems for real-time threat assessment, multi-layered interceptors, and advanced radar networks for 24/7 surveillance. It is designed to safeguard critical national infrastructure, military installations, and civilian sites.
The mission connects to the broader Rashtra Suraksha Kavach initiative and is India's indigenous version of an Iron Dome-like defense system. It is a key component of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, focusing on domestic research, development, and manufacturing. The mission has recently been energized by the elevation of the India–Israel relationship to a 'Special Strategic Partnership' in February 2026, which includes Israel's willingness to share technology for its Integrated Air and Missile Defence (IAMD) systems. While the foundation is the existing IACCS, the mission represents a significant upgrade and expansion, aiming for a fully indigenous and comprehensive defense shield by 2035.
