Supply Chains

A Supply Chain is a complex logistics system and a relative concept that encompasses all the processes and intermediaries necessary to transform raw materials into finished products and distribute them to the final consumer. It is fundamentally a sequence of transportation and inventory management tasks. While the concept of moving goods existed in ancient trade networks like the Silk Road starting around 130 BCE, the term "supply chain management" was formally introduced by British logistician Keith Oliver in a 1982 interview with the Financial Times. The problem it solved was the need to integrate procurement, production, and distribution into a seamless, strategic function, moving beyond a sole focus on mere cost reduction.

The mechanism works through three fundamental phases: procurement, production, and logistics and distribution. Procurement involves supplying production sites with raw materials. Production transforms these materials into finished products. Logistics and distribution cover storage, transport, and final delivery to the end customer. The entire system involves the flow of product, information, and finance. The concept connects to logistics management, inventory management, and demand management. It is also closely related to the value chain, which includes non-physical, value-adding activities like innovation and design. Suppliers are often organized into tiers, with first-tier suppliers providing goods directly to the client.

Recently, the field has undergone a transformation, with the "new normal" being characterized by continuous disruption due to geopolitical issues and shifting trade policies, rendering static planning models ineffective. The focus is shifting to greater agility, sustainability, and resilience. This change is driven by the integration of advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) for demand forecasting and operational efficiency. The strategic goal is moving from merely navigating disruption to delivering "Total Value" by unifying customer, employee, and partner interactions.
