TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan

The TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (Tuberculosis-Free India Campaign) is a national-level public-health scheme and intensified campaign under the broader National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP), which itself operates under the National Health Mission (NHM). The campaign's goal is to rapidly decrease the incidence and mortality of Tuberculosis (TB) to achieve India's target of eliminating the disease by 2025, which is five years ahead of the global Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target of 2030.

The Abhiyan was launched by the President of India on September 9, 2022, as the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, to accelerate the country's progress against TB, which has the world's highest burden in India. It was created to solve the problem of high TB incidence, mortality, and the need for greater community involvement and patient support.

The scheme works through a "Whole-of-Society and Whole-of-Government" approach, emphasizing Janbhagidari (people's participation). A key mechanism is the Ni-kshay Mitra Initiative, launched in September 2022, which encourages individuals and institutions to adopt TB patients and provide additional nutritional, diagnostic, and vocational support. This support is tracked via the Ni-kshay portal. The Abhiyan also focuses on proactive case finding through systematic screening of high-risk populations in vulnerable villages and wards, using advanced diagnostics like AI-enabled hand-held X-rays and upfront Nucleic Acid Amplification Testing (NAAT). All diagnostic and treatment services are provided free of cost under the NTEP.

The Abhiyan connects to the Ni-kshay Poshan Yojana (NPY), which provides a Direct Benefit Transfer of ₹1000 per month to all TB patients for nutritional support. Recently, the Abhiyan has been intensified through a 100-day campaign, first launched on December 7, 2024, in 347 high-priority districts, and later expanded nationwide after March 2025. The program has also introduced a newer, shorter, and more efficacious four-drug regimen—BPaLM (Bedaquiline, Pretomanid, Linezolid, and Moxifloxacin)—for drug-resistant TB patients.
