The term Tamilaga is a component of the ancient and modern concept of Tamilakam (தமிழகம்), which is a historical and cultural concept meaning the "home of Tamil" (Tamiḻ + -akam). The concept originated during the Sangam period (c. 300 BCE to 300 CE) to define the geographical region inhabited by the ancient Tamil people, where Tamil was the natural language and permeated the culture of all inhabitants.
Historically, Tamilakam covered the southernmost region of the Indian subcontinent, including present-day Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, and southern parts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The problem it solved was defining a distinct cultural and linguistic area, which was politically divided into regions called Perunadu ("Great country"). The mechanism of governance during the Sangam period involved a triumvirate of monarchical states: the Cheras, Cholas, and Pandyas.
The concept connects directly to the modern state of Tamil Nadu, which was renamed from Madras State on January 14, 1969. In contemporary India, Tamil politicians and orators often use the name Tamilakam to refer to the current state of Tamil Nadu alone, a change from its ancient, broader geographical extent. The term is also used in the name of the regional political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), founded on February 2, 2024, where "Tamilaga" translates to "Tamil Nadu" or "land of the Tamils," aligning the party with the state's deep-rooted Dravidian political history.
