Tata Group

The Tata Group is an Indian multinational conglomerate, a type of corporate institution, headquartered in Mumbai. It was founded in 1868 by Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata as a trading company, with the initial capital of ₹21,000, and later diversified into textiles, steel, and power, mirroring the evolution of Indian capitalism. The founder's vision was to establish industries that would contribute to India's development, leading to the creation of the Tata Iron and Steel Company (TISCO), now Tata Steel, in 1907, and the establishment of the Indian Institute of Science in 1909.

The Group operates through a unique mechanism where Tata Sons Private Limited acts as the principal investment holding company and promoter of the Tata companies. A crucial provision in its structure is that 66% of the equity share capital of Tata Sons is held by philanthropic Tata Trusts, which directs dividends towards supporting education, health, and livelihood generation. Each of the Group's 31 companies, which span verticals like Information Technology (Tata Consultancy Services), Automotive (Tata Motors), and Steel, operates independently under its own board of directors. The companies are bound by the Tata Code of Conduct (TCoC) and the Business Excellence and Promotion (BEBP) agreement, which governs the use of the 'Tata' brand and enforces quality standards.

A significant recent change involves the holding company, Tata Sons, which has historically remained private. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued new regulations, effective from July 1, 2026, that classify Tata Sons as an Upper Layer Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC-UL) due to its assets exceeding the ₹1 lakh crore threshold. This classification, clarified by the RBI's directions on April 29, 2026, mandates a public listing to increase transparency, effectively blocking Tata Sons' attempt to remain unlisted by surrendering its Core Investment Company status.
