The UN Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance (AI Dialogue) is a recurring international platform or concept for multilateral cooperation on AI governance, established to ensure a shared global approach to the technology. It was created by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution A/RES/79/325, adopted by consensus on August 26, 2025. The Dialogue originated from a commitment made in the Global Digital Compact in September 2024.
The primary problem it addresses is the need to govern AI collectively and to bridge the "AI divide," ensuring that governance reflects the priorities of all nations, not just the most technologically advanced. The mechanism brings together all 193 United Nations Member States alongside the private sector, civil society, academia, and the technical community to exchange best practices and build common approaches.
Key discussion areas include developing safe, secure, and trustworthy AI systems, ensuring robust human oversight, promoting the interoperability of national governance regimes, and addressing capacity gaps in developing countries. The Dialogue is a key mechanism for implementing the Global Digital Compact and works in tandem with the newly established United Nations Independent International Scientific Panel on AI (IISP-AI), which provides evidence-based input. The inaugural session took place in Geneva on July 6 and 7, 2026. As a new initiative, it has not been replaced, but its success is measured by turning principles into concrete action before the next session in May 2027.
